Embellish Magazine Challenge: Felt

 
 

Today I decided to try the newest challenge from Embellish Magazine.  The challenge was to use the colors pink, red, yellow, and brown as well as use felt somewhere.  I love felt!  I'm learning many ways to use it.  In my card I stamped on it.  I used StazOn ink to stamp the butterfly image on the butterfly die cut.  I really like the look of it.

 

For this card I chose to take the colors for the challenge and gradiate them from red on the bottom to pink to yellow using pastels.  Then I stamped the words with chocolate chip ink.  I added a red scallop for interest.  Then I embossed the pink cardstock base using an embossing folder.  Then added the sentiment.  Thought this card would be perfect for a girl any age.

Have a Spooktacular Halloween

 

I created this card using the color pallet for Embellish Magazine's color challenge.  The colors were yellow (So Saffron), Grey, black and white.   

 

The second part of the challenge was to make your own designer paper using stamps.  I used a simple straight stamp that was part of the Been Boo'd stamp set (from Papertrey Ink) to create lined paper below the ribbon.  Then I used a die-cut to create the grey background.  I bordered the card by taking a stylist and ruler to create embossed edges.

 

I really like this color combo.  I am in a Halloween mood because it is officially October so went with a spooky theme.  But really these colors can be so elegant together.  Creating a much different card.

SHOW~N~TELL monday

Today's Show~n~Tell is yet another sketch from Clean and Simple Stamping.  I love their sketches because they are so easy.  I feel I can do so much with them.

And this is what I did with it...

 

I have been waiting for the chance to play with my new stamp set Falling Leaves from PTI.  I felt this was the perfect time....I love the sentiments that go with the stamp set.  Especially this one on my card.

Supplies:

Really Rust, White, And Chocolate Chip cardstock (SU!)

Designer series paper

Falling Leaves stamp set (PTI)

Chocolate Chip pigment ink (SU!), Versamark ink

 Natural twine

Sage Shadow, Really Rust, and More Mustard markers (SU!)

Scalloped edge punch

Dimensional tape

adhesive

scissors

*SU! = Stampin' Up!  *PTI = Papertrey Ink

Instructions:

 

1. Fold Really Rust cardstock into shape of a card.
2. Stamp leaves with versamark onto Really Rust cardstock
3. Cut a 3 x 4 1/4 piece of white cardstock.
4. Cut two pieces of 3/4 x 3 inch designer paper.
5. Adhere designer paper onto white cardstock.
6. Stamp branches image with Chocolate Chip ink.
7. Use markers to color directly on the leaves stamp.  Huff and stamp image.
8. Distress edges.
9. Punch scalloped edges with chocolate chip paper.  Adhere onto white cardstock.
10. Stamp sentiment onto Really Rust cardstock. Cut out around sentiment and distress edges.
11. Wrap twine around main image. 
12. Adhere sentiment with dimensional tape.  Tie a knot with twine.

 

 

 

SHOW~N~TELL monday

Monday was a holiday in the states.  That meant no school or work.  So the holiday really threw me off schedule.  That's why I am posting the Show~n~Tell today instead of Monday.  But late is better than not at all:)

 

Today's Show~n~tell is a card I created using the FTL106.  Here is the layout...

And this is how I made it...

 

Supplies:

Bashful Blue (SU!), Read Red (SU!) and White cardstock

Up, Up and Away stamp set (PTI)

StazOn black ink, Whisper White craft ink (SU!)

Bookmark die from PTI

Various markers

Blender Pen

White gel pen

Dimensional tape

Adhesive

Scissors

*SU! stands for Stampin Up!; PTI stands for Papertrey Ink

 

Instructions:

1. Cut Bashful Blue cardstock to 5 1/2 x 4 1/4.  Fold over to create card.
2. Use Whisper White craft ink to stamp clouds onto blue cardstock.
3. Die cut Read Red cardstock using bookmark die.  Cut off top portion.  Glue to card.
4. Use white gel pen to faux stitch the edge.
5. Stamp hot air balloons onto white paper using black ink.  Color.  Blend. Cut.
6. Adhere to card using dimensional tape.

Keeping Those Papers Organized

Can you hear the school bell ring?  Yep!  It's that time of year again...Back to school.

 

And that's my inspiration for this little creation:

 

I have 3 children in school right now.  After school each of them reach into their backpacks and hand me a stack of papers.  Some are just for me to enjoy and some have to be signed and returned.  The trouble is, I don't remember who gave me what sometimes.  And I can't always rely of my little ones knowing.  They hardly glance at them most of the time.  I had to find a way to organize them according to child. 

 

This is how it works:  My children place the paper that I should see on the *in* clipboard and attach a clothespin with their name on it to the papers.  I take a look at them, place any signed papers on the *out* clipboard also attaching their name clothespin to the stack.  I made a clothespin for each of my four children and one for my DH and I.  This way the entire family is covered.  So even though the picture above only says *MOM* and  *DAD* there is one for each of us.  And the twine holding the clothespins is full when all of us are on there.

 

So I showed my creation for today, now let me tell you how I made it...

 
I found two inexpensive clipboards.  I painted each of them with Barn Red paint using a sponge brush.  It took a couple coats to completely cover.

 

 
After they were dry I stamped the apple boarder from PTI's School Time stamp set using Whisper White Craft Ink from Stampin' UP.  When dry I added a black and white gingham ribbon.  One clipboard I tied a bow, the other I knotted a couple lengths of ribbon together.

 

 
To create the tag I punched Old Olive cardstock with the scalloped punch (both from SU!).  The I used stamped the apple using Ridinghood Red from SU! and the boarder with black StazOn ink onto PTI's white cardstock. (both these stamps were also from the School Time stamp set).  I used a circle punch to punch them out.  Then I used a white gel pen to create the little dots on the scallops.

 

 
The same method is used for creating the clothespins.  Just stamp-off the apple before stamping onto the tag.  This way it is lighter and easier to write names using black marker.

 

 
Then use super strong double sided tape to attach the small clothespin.

 

 
I used a tag punch to display which clipboard was *IN* and *OUT*.  After punching I stamped the notebook stamp from the same stamp set onto the white cardstock.  I used Baja Breeze ink from SU using the stamping off technique.  Then I wrote *IN* and *OUT* with black marker.  I attached them to the top right side of the clipboards with super strong double sided tape.

 

 
As a finishing touch I added ribbon to the top of the clipboards.

Searching For My Mojo

TSN - Aluminum Foil Embossing

Hi fellow stampers and papercrafters.  How was your Easter?  We had a storm roll in and were pounded by snow!  It dumped about a foot and a half in a 72 hour period.  Soooo...needless to say we had our Easter egg hunt indoors.  But we jazzed it up a little by having it at night, in the dark, with flashlights.  That was TONS of fun:)

Now on to what you're here for...

Welcome to this week's TSN (Try Something New). My weekly challenge to myself has really been rewarding.  It has helped me to think outside of the box.  I look at everything around me as inspiration.  Including the aluminum foil I used last night when I was cooking dinner.  I had heard of embossing foil.  I have noticed special foil that was sold especially for that purpose.  But as I was using my regular aluminum foil that is regularly in my kitchen, I wondered if I could emboss with it.  I found out that I CAN!!!

Here is the card I created using the foil embossing technique:

So I found that I can't emboss the foil alone because it is too thin. I had to put some kind of heavy paper backing to give it a little more strength.  I decided to emboss my aluminum foil with my embossing folder and die cutting machine.  But I have found that you could use a stylist alone to create some unique and beautiful designs. 

Here are the steps to how I embossed the aluminum foil:

You will need aluminum foil, thick cardstock (I used PTI's white cardstock), and an embossing folder or template.

Cut the cardstock the size you would like it to be on your card or creation.  The cut the aluminum foil slightly larger. Place the foil on the cardstock and wrap the edges around it.   Make sure the foil is tight and secure.

Place the foil/cardstock foil side down onto the embossing template or folder. 

Your finished result is a perfectly embossed foil paper.  Leave the white cardstock on the foil and place it onto the card.  Then finish the card.

Here's a tip:  The embossed aluminum foil is pretty delicate.  Take card when you are finishing the card.  Also take card when you are mailing or delivering the card.  You may want to place a piece of cardstock over the card to prevent little nicks or unwanted embossing. 

The card I chose to make with the aluminum foil was a Father's day card.  Here is the inside...

I just thought the aluminum foil was very industious and masculine.  I may need to play with it some more, though.  I think some really pretty things can be done with it.

Movie Night Treats

I'm back!  I finally got that HUGE pile of laundry under control. 

Today I put together some super cute treats for an upcoming family movie night. I love curling up for a really good movie.  I like it even more when I can share a good, wholesome movie with my family.  We like to plan one day a week that we can bring out the blankets and pillows and park ourselves in front of the tv. We don't have cable, so this is an event.  Even my 2 year old loves it.  Our night is usually on Friday.  It's just nice to have an evening that is relaxing after a busy week.  The whole family really looks forward to it.

Even though our movie night is fun in itself, I like to jazz it up once and a while.  Sometimes I make a treat that matches the movie (example: Onion rings for The Lord of the Rings movies).  And sometimes I just like to make a treat that is fun and different.

This is what I came up this week...

 

That is yummy chocolate popcorn inside those treat holders (mmmm...).  These cute little treats are perfect for little hands.  And the portion is just right. Kids like to have there very own treat that they don't have to share.  Add in a refreshment of some kind and a movie and you are set.

If you would like to make these little treats, here are the directions:

1)  Cut a 4x8 piece of cardstock or designer paper.  Then measure in 3 1/2 inches lengthwise and score.  Then turn the paper and score 1/2 inch in on both the long sides of your paper.

2)  Cut along the 1/2 inch scored edge on the longer end of the paper. (see picture below)

3)  Use a die cut circle cutter and your die cutting machine to round the edges. 

4)  Fold in the scored edges and put a strong adhesive on the folds. 

5)   Fold it into a pocket.

You can add your favorite little candy or treat inside.  If you would like to try this chocolate popcorn here is the recipe:

Ingredients

2 quarts popped popcorn

1 cup peanuts (optional)

3/4 cup sugar

1/4 cup corn syrup

1/4 cup cocoa powder

1/2 cup butter

1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C). Oil a 10x15 inch baking pan with sides.
2. Place popcorn and peanuts into a large, metal bowl, and set aside. Stir together the sugar, corn syrup, cocoa powder, and butter in a saucepan over medium-high heat until it comes to a boil. Boil for 2 minutes. Stir in the vanilla, then pour over the popcorn. Stir until the popcorn is well coated. Spread the popcorn into the prepared pan.
3. Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes, stirring several times.
4. Remove from the oven, and allow to cool to room temperature. Break into small clumps, and store in an airtight container.

Footnote:  1 cup of uncooked popcorn kernels yields about 2 quarts of cooked popcorn.

Sweets Week - Day 4

Welcome to my 4th day of sweet Valentine's Day ideas.  I just LOVE Valentine's Day (if you haven't noticed already...lol).  I am soooo excited!  I have a bunch of really cute "sweet somethings" for everyone I know.  My kids have been preparing their Valentine's for their classes.  I look forward to participating in their class parties.  I also look forward to giving their teachers a little sweet to show them how much I appreciate what they do. :)

Today's sweet treat is designed with the teacher in mind.  I LOVE this adorable elephant template from Paper Trey Ink.  I just downloaded, printed, and cut.  Then, poof!  I have a super adorable card.  The template was designed to be used for babies.  But I thought it could be more versatile than that.  I just punched a heart in the middle to create a window.

 

Inside I added a tiny bag of peanut M&Ms.  Then I added a sentiment that was directed to our special teacher.

 

This really makes a great last minute treat because it is so easy.  I even though this would be so cute as a favor for a baby shower as well.
