Tom Turkey Tutorial

 I am back with yet another tutorial this week.  WOW!  Two weeks in a row...I am on a roll!  Today's tutorial is my Tom Turkey table decoration...

 

This little turkey can stand alone on your Thanksgiving table or can be attached to a favor box, Thanksgiving card, napkin ring or anything your creative mind can conjure.  He would look super adorable at place settings and dotted around the dinner table. 

 

To make this turkey you will need...

 

Cardstock: brown, red, green, yellow, black, and orange

1 3/8 inch circle punch

1 inch circle punch

small flower punch

hole punch

Nestabilities dies: large scalloped circle, medium circle, smaller scalloped circle

black marker

white gel pen

dimensional tape

adhesive

scissors

 

 
1. Start by using brown cardstock to punch circles with the 1 3/8 and 1 inch punches.  Punch 1 small flower with yellow cardstock.  Use hand-held small hole punch to make two blackcircles.  Then take the Nestabilities dies to cut small scalloped orange circle, a green plain circle that is just bigger than the small scalloped circle, and a larger scalloped circle using red cardstock.  Set all your pieces aside.

 

 
2. Gather the brown circles, black circles, and flower.  With scissors to cut the flower in half.  This will be the turkey's feet.  Then cut a small triangle out of yellow cardstock for the beak.  Last, use red cardstock to cut a small red wattle for the turkey's face.  Now you are ready to adhere them all together. 

 

 
3.  Take the smaller brown circle, which is the head, and adhere to the bigger brown circle, which is the body.  Then take the two halves of the yellow flower and adhere them to the bottom of the large brown circle on the underside of the paper for the feet.  Then adhere the black circles for eyes, yellow beak, and red wattle.  Use a white gel pen to add a gleam in your turkey's eyes.  Set aside.

 

 
4. Now begin making the turkey tail.  Take the large red scalloped circle and measure 8 scallops in to create a fold.  It helps to use a ruler to create a crisp, clean fold.

 
5.  Fold the scalloped circle back so that it can stand straight.  This will help your turkey stand.  If you are making the turkey to attack to a box or card, just cut where the fold would be.

 

 
6.  Now you are ready to attach the rest of the tail.  Mount dimensional tape on the back of the green circle and orange scalloped circle. Adhere the circles so that the larger one is in full view behind the smaller.  Use a ruler to fold under the bottom of the circles.  Or cut them if you don't want your turkey to stand alone.

 

 
7.  Mount dimensional tape to the back of the turkey body.  Attach to the tail.

 

 
8.  At this point you can be finished.  But if you want a pilgrim turkey you can add a hat.

 

 
9.  Cut black cardstock into a 1 x 1 inch square.  Then cut a strip of black cardstock that can be the brim of the hat.  Then cut a very small square out of yellow cardstock for a buckle.  Use a black marker to color a small square in the middle of the yellow square to look like a buckle.

 

10.  Adhere the small, black stip to the bottom of the black square.  Then adhere the buckle to create the hat.  Then adhere the hat to the turkey's head.

 

 
Your turkey is completely finished!!  And he will look so adorable on that Thanksgiving table.

Pumpkin Treat Box Tutorial

 

Hello!  I haven't featured a tutorial lately so I thought it was about time I should.  The weather is beginning to look snowy so I figured today was the perfect day to hang out indoors crafting.

 

I created a pumpkin treat box to set at place-settings for Thanksgiving dinner.  I plan on filling them with nuts and candy corn.  The tradition started with my DH's mother.  This Thanksgiving these little treat boxes will adorn our table.  But you can make these and use them as little gifts to tell a certain someone how much you appreciate them.

 

This is how you make it...

 

You will need:

6x6 piece of orange cardstock

Scrap piece of green cardstock

Oval die cut or punch

Orange ink

Dimensional tape

Adhesive

Treat box die cut (mine is from Papertrey Ink) or keep reading to learn how to make the basket part of the craft.

 
1.  Take your 6x6 piece of orange cardstock and score 2 inches in on each side.  You should have 9 squares on your paper.  Then take scissors and cut the scored lines on one side of the paper.  Turn the paper around and do the same on the opposite end.

 

 
2.  Fold up the scored side of the paper to create your box or basket.  Bring the middle up and then pull the end flaps to the center.

 

 
3.  Do not completely overlap the end flaps.  Bring them to the center to create an x.  Do this on both sides.  You box is done.

 

 
4.  Cut 3 ovals large enough to cover the front of the box.

 

 
5.  Take a sponge and stamping ink to ink the edges of the ovals.  This creates the look of dimension.

 

 
6.  Adhere 2 ovals to the box side by side.  Do not overlap them.

 

 
7.  Add dimensional tape to the third oval.  Then adhere to the middle of the two ovals.

 

 
8.  Hand cut a stem from green cardstock.  Glue this in place.  If you would like a curly vine simply cut a thin, long piece of cardstock.  Curl it around a skewer or lollipop stick to make it curl.  Adhere in place.

 

 
You done!  My treat box only took me minutes to create.  And it's even faster if you happen to have a box die cut on hand.  My small pumpkin treat box was made from the die cut and nontextured cardstock.  The larger one from the handmade box and textured cardstock.  You can see each creates a different affect.

Envelope Gift Bag Tutorial

Got a little gift but no gift bag or box?  Looking for a way to package tiny Easter gifts?  I've found something that might help.  And chances are you already have the materials you need in your house. 

All you need is an envelope and some crafty embellishments and this is what you can create...

 

You can make this adorable gift bag with any sized envelope.  The larger the envelope, the larger the gift bag.  Just follow these few simple steps:

1) I used a standard note sized envelope (A2 size).  First I sealed the envelope.  Then I used my straight cutter to cut an inch off the short side of the envelope.

2)  Scored 3/4 inches on all the other sides of the envelope.  Then fold the scored lines back and forth to make it easier to manipulate.

3)  Now open the envelope and fold the corners into triangle flaps.  Bend and manipulate the scored folds to create a box.

4)  Use some super tacky tape to adhere the flaps to the bottom of the gift bag (box). 

Now you can add ribbon handles or just embellish and create a flap at the top.  I took a scrap piece of designer paper and used a decorative punch to add interest on either side of it.  Then I attached the paper with ribbon.

Here's an extra little tip:

I wanted some tissue paper or paper strips stuffed inside my gift bag.  The problem was, I didn't have any.  So I made my own.  (I got this little tip when I was a Stampin' Up demonstrator.)

1)  Choose either cardstock or designer paper of your liking.  Then use a paper crimper to add texture.

2)  Use a straight cutter to cut the paper into strips.  Make sure you cut the opposite direction of the crimps. (TIP:  I was thinking that you could also try a paper shredder.  I haven't tried that yet, but I want to)

3) Gather all the pieces together and munch and crush them in your hand.  This part is my favorite! I take out all my aggression as I squeeze and smoosh (LOL).

This is really a good way to use up old or outdated designer paper.  When it is in your package you just see the colors.

TSN - My Leprechaun Friend

Welcome to this weeks TSN (try something new).  I have seen punch pals around the internet for years.  I LOVE all of them.  There are just so many talented people out there!  It amazes me how they can come up with all these adorable critters only using punches.  So today I am devoting my TSN to punch pals.  To be more specific, the Leprechaun Punch Pal.  I noticed a version of a Leprechaun punch pal a few years ago.  Even though I thought he was the cutest thing in the entire world, I did not attempt to create him.  I FINALLY decided to try it today. 

Here is my own Leprechaun Punch Pal:

Here are all the punches I used for my Leprechaun.

And here are all the punches and pieces needed for my Leprechaun.

I started by gluing a piece of Blush Blossom cardstock circle onto the Really Rust cardstock scalloped circle.  Then I adhered his ears on with very small Blush Blossom circles.  I cut the Really Rust small flower in half and adhered it under the Blush Blossom circle for his nose and mustache.

I then added the Basic Black cardstock small circles for the eyes.  I used a white gel pen to give a little gleam to them.

I used the round tab punch and Glorious Green cardstock for the hat.  I folded over the tab and used scissors to cut it straight on each side.  I basically made it into a rectangle. (see the picture below.  The bottom one is the one that has been cut.)

Then I added the black sash that was punched with the Word Window punch and black cardstock. 

I cut the black sash to fit the hat.  I glued it onto the Leprechaun face.  Then I glued the Yo Yo Yellow rectangle and black rectangle to the sash to create a buckle.

To finish I placed the Glorious Green cardstock that had been punched with the word window punch onto the bottom of the hat to create the brim.  Then I added a little pink pastel chalk to his cheeks to make them rosy. 

This little guy can be used for so many things.  I could use him on a card, he can be sandwiched between a peppermint patty, or he can be used for a refrigerator magnet (that's what I did).

Movie Night Treats

I'm back!  I finally got that HUGE pile of laundry under control. 

Today I put together some super cute treats for an upcoming family movie night. I love curling up for a really good movie.  I like it even more when I can share a good, wholesome movie with my family.  We like to plan one day a week that we can bring out the blankets and pillows and park ourselves in front of the tv. We don't have cable, so this is an event.  Even my 2 year old loves it.  Our night is usually on Friday.  It's just nice to have an evening that is relaxing after a busy week.  The whole family really looks forward to it.

Even though our movie night is fun in itself, I like to jazz it up once and a while.  Sometimes I make a treat that matches the movie (example: Onion rings for The Lord of the Rings movies).  And sometimes I just like to make a treat that is fun and different.

This is what I came up this week...

 

That is yummy chocolate popcorn inside those treat holders (mmmm...).  These cute little treats are perfect for little hands.  And the portion is just right. Kids like to have there very own treat that they don't have to share.  Add in a refreshment of some kind and a movie and you are set.

If you would like to make these little treats, here are the directions:

1)  Cut a 4x8 piece of cardstock or designer paper.  Then measure in 3 1/2 inches lengthwise and score.  Then turn the paper and score 1/2 inch in on both the long sides of your paper.

2)  Cut along the 1/2 inch scored edge on the longer end of the paper. (see picture below)

3)  Use a die cut circle cutter and your die cutting machine to round the edges. 

4)  Fold in the scored edges and put a strong adhesive on the folds. 

5)   Fold it into a pocket.

You can add your favorite little candy or treat inside.  If you would like to try this chocolate popcorn here is the recipe:

Ingredients

2 quarts popped popcorn

1 cup peanuts (optional)

3/4 cup sugar

1/4 cup corn syrup

1/4 cup cocoa powder

1/2 cup butter

1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C). Oil a 10x15 inch baking pan with sides.
2. Place popcorn and peanuts into a large, metal bowl, and set aside. Stir together the sugar, corn syrup, cocoa powder, and butter in a saucepan over medium-high heat until it comes to a boil. Boil for 2 minutes. Stir in the vanilla, then pour over the popcorn. Stir until the popcorn is well coated. Spread the popcorn into the prepared pan.
3. Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes, stirring several times.
4. Remove from the oven, and allow to cool to room temperature. Break into small clumps, and store in an airtight container.

Footnote:  1 cup of uncooked popcorn kernels yields about 2 quarts of cooked popcorn.

Sweets Week - Day 1

Hello there!  I hope you all had a fab weekend.  Did you watch the Super Bowl?  What a game, eh?  I always root for the underdog.  It was great to see the Saints win. :)

I want to introduce my first annual Sweets Week.  Since Valentine's Day is fast approaching (it'll be here Sunday), I wanted to share some super sweet ideas for the occasion.  The sweet ideas are perfect for your sweetie (OK...I will stop with the gushing).

My first sweet idea is perfect for your honey's sweet tooth.  I call them Surprise Kiss Cupcakes.  The surprise is the Chocolate Hershey's Kiss that is in the center of the cupcake.  I followed the directions for making Cherry Chip cupcakes.  Then I placed the batter in paper-lined cupcake pans, filling them 2/3 full.  Then we placed Hershey Kisses in the middle of the batter for each cupcake.  Here's a tip - When placing the kisses in the batter, make sure the Kisses do not touch the bottom of the pan.  If it does, the Kiss will stick to the paper when you try to peal the liner away from the cupcake.  It is alright if some of the chocolate Kiss sticks out of the batter.  The cupcake will rise over it as it bakes.

Then to make this treat extra special, create a cupcake holder to give as a gift. 

Here's how you do it:

1)  Cut a 5x5 piece of cardstock.  Score the cardstock at 1 inch and 4 inches all the way around.Cut four of the scored edges to create a box.  You can see where to cut in the picture below. 

 2)  Then create the inside piece that will secure the cupcake in the gift basket.  Cut a 3 3/4 x 3 3/4 piece of cardstock. I used my circle nesties to die cut a circle in the center.  Make sure the cupcake fits in the circle.  Then score 1/2 inch on each side of the cardstock square.  Cut the scored edges to create a box. 

This is how it will look when it is placed in the box.

3)  Cut a 11 x 1/2 inch piece of cardstock for the decorative handle.  Glue into place.

4)  If you would like to create scallops, cut 3 x 1 inches of colored cardstock.  Scallop with the scalloped edge punch (or and edge punch) and glue in place.

5)  Decorate the outside the way you want.  I added a little tag and taped it to a toothpick.  I stuck it in the cupcake for more added interest.

Now you are ready to give this super sweet treat to your sweetheart!

TSN Tutorial (Finally)

Good afternoon!!  I really apologize for not having this up sooner.  So, instead of giving lots of excuses why my post wasn't yesterday or this morning, I thought I would just move on with the tutorial.  After all, that's what you are here for right...lol!!

So, Thursday I had my weekly TSN (Try Something New) post.  The challenge was to create a shape card.  I created a baby Onesie card that was inspired by a friend.  You can check out the entire post HERE.  Today I am going to give the directions for making the card.  I am also going to add a little something else to the card. I am going to make it a gift card holder as well. :)

Here we go:

1) Cut a 4 1/4 x 11 piece of cardstock.  Score the cardstock lengthwise at 3 1/4 and 8 3/4.

2) Cut a 4 1/4 x 4 1/4 piece of designer paper. Use the scalloped edge punch to punch one side of the DP.

3)  Center your oval punch on the top of the card.  Punch paper at a little less than half the punch size.  See the picture below.  

4)  Punch the designer paper at more than half the punch size.

5)  Use the scalloped circle punch to punch the corners of the bottom of the card.

6)  Adhere designer paper, buttons, ribbon and stamp sentiment to the front of the card.

7) Add a sentiment to the inside of the card. 

8)  To make this card into a gift card holder:  Adhere the edges of the bottom flap of the card.  Make sure you do not adhere the top of the flap.  That is where the gift card will be placed.  Add brads to the edge/corners for added security.

PTI January Blog Hop

  Hello! This is my first time entering the Papertrey Ink Blog Hop.  The challenge was to create a card and decorate the inside.  Even embellishing the envelope was an option. 

My father's birthday is coming up, so I thought this was a good time to make him his card.  I also wanted to take this opportunity to create a card that is not the ordinary rectangle or square.  I even made a place for a gift card inside.

So, this is the card front:

And now I will show how I made the card. 

1)  Cut a 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of cardstock in half lengthwise.  Then score the paper at 4 1/4 inch and at 9 inches. 

2) Use a circle tool to round the corner of the end that has the shortest distance between fold and end. 

3)  Use the word window punch and center it on the other end of the card.  Punch twice side by side to make it large enough for a gift card.

4) Cut designer paper to size.  Make sure you glue around the edges of the larger designer paper so there is room to slip the gift card through the word window.  

 

5) Create a larger embellishment that will hold the card closed.  Tuck the smaller, rounded piece under the embellishment.

6)  Embellish the inside.

4x4 Envelope Tutorial

Good morning!  TGIF!!  Yesterday was the second snow day of the school year.  I loved it!  Temps got down to below -20 degrees in the valley we live in.  That means it is too cold for school.  The kids and I had a great day off.  We watched movies, made cupcakes and colored.  My oldest daughter invited a friend over.  They watched NCIS all day long! 

Anyway, Wednesday I posted a 4x4 card using the TESC#96 challenge.  You can check out the card and sketch here.  Now, what if you made a 4x4 card and you don't have an envelope on hand?  What do you do?  You make one!!  It's really pretty simple.

 
 Use a notecard size envelope measuring 5-3/4 by 4-3/8.  Seal the empty envelope.

Then place the sealed envelope on a hand cutter. Cut your envelope so that it is 4-3/8 by 4-3/8 square. 

 
Create a flap by cutting a piece of designer paper (I used K&Company) 4-3/8 x 2-3/4.

I chose to use my scalloped punch to scallop the designer paper that would fold over and seal the envelope.

Determine how large you would want your flap.  Glue the designer paper inside the back of the envelope. Fold over to create your flap.

Then you may choose to decorate or address the other side. I used the vintage labels stamp set from PTI and a little heart from Gel-a-tins.  The ink I used was Melon Mambo from SU.

This is so simple and makes a great personalized envelope that matches your card.  Great for Valentine's Day!!
